The AISI 304 stainless steel is an austenitic steel, commonly known as "18/8 stainless steel" because it contains around 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It is one of the most common and versatile grades of stainless steel available on the market.
The technical characteristics of polished AISI 304 stainless steel include:
Corrosion resistance: thanks to its high chromium content, AISI 304 steel is highly resistant to corrosion, especially when exposed to acidic substances and salts.
Temperature resistance: AISI 304 steel is able to withstand high temperatures, up to about 870°C, without permanent deformation or structural damage.
Mechanical strength: AISI 304 steel has good tensile and bending strength, but its hardness and wear resistance are lower compared to other grades of stainless steel such as AISI 316.
Workability: AISI 304 steel is easily workable, including welding, bending, drilling, and machining.
Hygiene: AISI 304 steel is often used in the food and pharmaceutical industries because it is resistant to corrosion and easy to clean and sanitize.
Polished AISI 304 stainless steel has a glossy surface finish, which gives it greater corrosion resistance compared to its matte counterpart. Additionally, the glossy finish makes the steel more aesthetically pleasing, and makes it a popular option for decorative applications.
